“You just have to surrender and it will be okay.”  We’ve all heard a phrase like this before. While surrendering is indeed important, sometimes there are practical things that we must apply in conjunction with this in order to see change.  By the end of this blog post, you will see a few ways Christians can benefit from therapy, which can ultimately bring us closer to God.

Three Ways Christians Can Benefit from Therapy:

#1.  Composed of Body, Soul, and Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV)

We find in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that we are made of body, soul, and spirit, which should lead one to believe that these areas must be nurtured. One way to nurture our soul (i.e., the mind, will, and emotions) is through therapy. Therapy can help you learn how to think healthier, how to manage your emotions, and how to align your will with the Father’s. Therapy can help you learn how to think and act in ways that are biblical.

#2    Jesus Asked Questions. (Matthew 16:13-16; Matthew 20:29-34; Luke 24:36-40; John 11:23-27; Luke 22:47-48)

Have you ever wondered why Jesus asked questions? He was fully human and fully God, right? Didn’t he already know? Yes. But what if he did this to raise self-awareness? What if he knew this would help the person identify what they were truly thinking/believing regarding the issue at hand, and give them an opportunity to adjust? The idea in therapy is that utilizing open-ended questions helps the client to really discover what is at the core of their concerns. Once you can name it, then you can make a decision on whether you want to continue in that way.

#3   God Uses People. (Ruth chapters 1-4)

In the book of Ruth, we see Ruth cling to Naomi after Naomi loses both of her sons, one of which was Ruth’s husband. Naomi is in utter despair and renames herself Mara meaning bitter. Ruth could have left Naomi (her mother-in-law) and gone home, but she clung to her and helped her through an incredibly difficult time. God used Ruth to bring comfort, hope, and redemption to a grieving mother. You may find that you need someone to come alongside and help you walk through a challenging season, and a therapist can be the person God uses to bring redemption in your life.

I think it’s pretty cool how God can use therapy to heal and assist Christians in utilizing practical tools to apply biblical principles! If you would like to set up an appointment, or set up a free 15-minute consultation, contact me here https://tawnyafarvelmft.com/schedule-now
