Made to Create

Made to Create (Genesis- Chapters 1 & 2)

Did you know that we were made to create? You may be wondering how can this be? I am not an artist, or a designer, an architect, or fill in the blank… And how does this have anything to do with mental health?

One thing I have been meditating on lately is that we are created in God’s image (Gen. 1:27), and if we are created in God’s image, with God as our Creator, then we must have the ability to create.

With many Scriptures pointing to God as our Creator, I began wrestling with the concept of creation. For example, what does the Creator get from creating? Well, we can see that it brings life to situations, i.e., man and woman are made, vegetation springs forth, animals come into existence, the concept of day and night emerges, to name a few. We can also see that it brings satisfaction, as God would declare it “good.” Additionally, when God decides to rest on the seventh day, we see the idea of rest enter in.

Taking these concepts of life, satisfaction, and rest, and holding them in light of the Creation Story, has given me a deeper understanding of how creation has played a role in my life. No, I am not an artist, nor am I a designer, or an architect… let’s just get that straight… I can barely even make a stick figure. However, one thing I know I can create (using GarageBand or Logic Pro) are beats.

While my beats may not be “Grammy-worthy,” or something I share with others, one thing I know is that the process of making beats, has been a space where I receive life, satisfaction, and rest. All which are good things for our mental health.

So what is it that you were made to create? Is it painting, drawing, sewing an outfit from scratch, creating a new meal with various spices, writing a song, putting together a dance, or a skit? What is one element you can create for your mental health that will bring life, rest, and a declaration of, “It is good”?
